This is quite discussed in SEO industry. Many webmasters now use nofollow tags for user submitted content on their blogs, forums, open discussion boards, etc. These rel=nofollow links will not contribute in SEO purposes and hence its wise to check if the link you leave on forum is nofollow or dofollow one.

Nofollow hyperlinks

This is the very simple and easy way to identify nofollow links. If you are using firefox browser, you have to install SEO for Firefox addon. If the addon is enabled before loading a page, you will find all nofollow links being displayed with RED background. Dofollow links look with usual styling.

Another way is by checking the source code of the page to see if it is a nofollow link or a normal one. There are many other addons available for this purpose, but this one has much more options and hence recommended.
