While writing previous posts on download torrents at office or when torrent content blocked, I found a funny comparison image which reflects the exact way of working of torrent. Below is the image I wish to share with you.

Torrent works on the concept that the large files you download are split into different pieces and when you download one particular piece completely, you will be parallely uploading the downloaded part. And hence you will be downloading and uploading torrent at the same time. The above image reflects the very correct representation of how torrent download works.

I found it as a royalty free image and hence you can use it anywhere if you need.

How to Download if Torrent Blocked at College / Office

Now you know how to download torrent at office, but what if torrent content is blocked at office or college. Is there any way to unblock torrent at office? Unblocking or blocking any protocol is the job of administrator and you will not be network admin when you use internet at your workplace. In these cases, you need to be little more intelligent to bypass their restrictions and still download torrent overcoming the torrent blocked.

You will use a third party service here to avoid the torrent client and still download the torrent from various trackers. The third party service I am talking about is BitLet. BitLet is such a service where you provide the url of the torrent file or upload the local torrent file and make it to download the data. The service is very cool and easy to use interface will help you get the work done fast.

The limitation with this is that you will not be able to control the download of torrent – you can’t pause the downloading torrent. Hence, this is not recommended for huge data like movies, games and large softwares. This would be better if you want to download small apps and e books.

How to Download Torrent in Office, College and Workplace

This silly trick would be of some help to few people who are download junkies but use the internet connections at schools, colleges or offices. The main idea behind it is that we just want to hide bittorrent from others that a downloading is going on with torrent. This trick may not be helpful if bittorrent protocol is blocked at your workplace, if not so is the case, you might find it useful. I am not introuducing any new tool to download torrents, but just manipulating the properties of torrent clients and Windows.

It is usually seen that most of the computers run more than 5-7 items which are displayed in the taskbar. If you find your success in hiding the torrent client icon in the taskbar, your half of the job is done. Lets see how to do it.

Right click on the taskbar > Properties. Under Notification Area, check the Hide Inactive Icons checkbox.

Click on customize button, you will see the list of items which are added in the taskbar before. Now, scroll to the torrent program and keep the setting to Hide always. Default will be hide when inactive which is not so favorable that it will not be hidden while downloading / uploading stuffs.

Also, it would perform great if you also change the setting to Autohide the taskbar.

Next, important thing to note is you should leave enough bandwidth to browsing instead of keeping everything for downloads. If you make use of entire bandwidth for downloads, anyone may doubt about it and find out the cause. If everything goes fine with this, you can download all movies, songs, softwares, games and whatever for all time the computers are on. Happy Downloading

The Pirate Bay, Mininova Blocked by Trojan – Solution

Recently it was reported that the two popular torrent sites are being blocked by a trojan spread from fake torrents. The torrent identified as Troj/Qhost-AC was hosted on The Pirate Bay. It was termed as a keygen and the file was a fake one.

The trojan was reported not to behave as normal malwares or spyware, but used to block two popular torrent sites – Mininova and The Pirate Bay.

Solution to Unblock Torrent Sites:

The blocking of Mininova and The Pirate Bay were due to the fact that the trojan edited the hosts file. This kind of behavior was observed with antivirus 2009. Here are simple steps [windows] to unblock the torrent sites:

Goto C:WindowsSystem32Driversetc – I assume you have installed windows on C drive, if not make proper changes.
Find the file hosts – Open it with Notepad.
You will find few entries which to redirect Mininova, The Pirate Bay and Superbay [The Pirate Bay forum] to 127.0.0.1 – localhost – so those sites cannot be accessed from your computer .
Now, delete those lines related with Mininova and other torrent sites. Now you have unblocked the torrents.

Note: This post is a solution to the problem based on the source report. We are not sure if the trojan runs continuously on your system or is it a one time affection.
