Introduction to Mobile Broadband – Mobile Internet at Broadband Speeds

This is one technological aspect which I’ve not dealt with on my site until now. Today, we shall investigate mobile broadband in more detail. If you have ever wondered how frequent fliers keep in touch through internet, the simple answer is mobile broadband. Many people today carry a netbook and with it, the convenient mobile broadband.

Mobile broadband is your broadband internet connection on the go which does not require any wires, connections, routers or mobile phones. If you look into the technology in more depth, you will find that you use a USB mobile broadband dongle inserted into your laptop/computer. The mobile broadband USB stick is a small flash drive like device which connects you to high speed internet on the go. This enables you to access internet at broadband speeds with the only requirement being the USB stick and the occurrence of a mobile signal in the area you want to connect.

The main advantage of this type of Internet connection is that you will be able to access internet anywhere. This is far better than WiFi, which you may access only at some hotspots. With a mobile broadband plan, you will save money on a landline that you never use. Since this technology is still emerging, you can find some great offers if you want to switch during the initial period. There is also a chance that the prices may go down in future, although this cannot be predicted. Another great advantage of mobile broadband is that you can get good connections even if your area does not support landline networking.

Although there are many advantages associated with mobile broadband, There are few disadvantages too. These are primarily similar to what you might experience with a mobile phone. For example, service may not be available in rural areas or the outskirts of a city. City areas will mostly have mobile signals, however there is a different problem associated with these. Because there are more users in such areas, the bandwidth gets divided and you may experience slower connections than those advertised. In additon , the speed of mobile broadband is somewhat lower when you are further away from a mobile tower.

By these days most of you are aware of Vodafone Zoozoo ads and one who watches it, start loving it. This is the only commercial which no one want to miss – such kind of creativity is there in it. I agree world’s costliest ad was very creative, but to be frank, it was boring to watch many times. And may of you have seen the hard work in making of Vodafone Zoozoo ads.

Now, its time you will find the real fun on social networking site Orkut. Yes, now you can use Vodafone Zoozoo emoticons on orkut scraps, community messages etc. You don’t need to learn any coding nor special tags for zoozoos. Just a mouse click will add a Zoozoo into your scrap/community message.

For this, you need to be a Firefox user Then, you need a Greasemonkey addon to be installed on your Firefox browser. Once you have Firefox with Greasemonkey, you will have to install this Greasemonkey script for Zoozoo ads emoticons images. Installing won’t require any huge procedure, you will find an install button and clicking on it will install script [if it won't work, right click on install button > View userscript source - there you will get a notification to install it.] You may need to login, you can use Bugmenot to bypass registration (better install bugmenot firefox addon for fake logins even bugmenot for internet explorer(old versions))

How To Remove “Category” Base for WordPress Categories

If you are a WordPress user, you have observed that the WP categories pages are normally using the "category" / any other (configurable) base term to show pages. It is never the category directly after the home page url. In simple words, your category page is example.com/category/cars and not example.com/cars. Most of us like to see the second type of url format, but WordPress by default won’t give any option to switch to this.

There are few things to be known with these url structures.

Advantages: Easy to remember and type urls, Google "may" give more priority for them while considering for sitelinks [not proved, but I say this by observation] which is really better than some Disclaimer, Privacy, About pages ranking on sitelinks.

Disadvantages: May be clash when the page with same url exist. Say you have a category “My Cars” and a page with same name “My Cars”, if your permalinks are set like mine, there will be a clash. I think considering this, WP don’t have such option by default.

If you are sure that your blog does not have such clash, you are free to use the second type of category urls. To delete Category/ from wp categories, install and activate WP No Category Base plugin. There are no extra setups in plugin, nor there are any hassles using it. It also works for sub-categories and sitemaps.

Update: Harsh pointed out the problem with this plugin. You will need to have either Redirection Plugin or Platinum SEO plugin to carry redirects to proper pages as your category urls are changed.

Microsoft Bing Search Engine – Google Killer Search at Bing.com

There have been news spreading about Microsoft is going to launch its new search engine which is expected to be a Google killer. ReadWriteWeb reports that the word Bing could not be trademarked by Microsoft and hence it is still not sure if it is going to be Bing.com. But the domain Bing.com is registered by Microsoft for a long term and currently loading blank pages.

AdAge reports MS is going to spend $80-100 million over advertising their Bing Search Engine to reduce market share of Google. They always have accused Apple for their high cost to establish Microsoft monopoly and Apple has always released their PC v Mac Ads to kick MS from their market. In this case, MS cannot shout at Google because Goog has been the best from ages and it maintains its No.1 ranking among all internet users. We need to wait and see what is going to happen in coming short future.

Remove Contact Form 7 to Speed Up Wordpress Blog

I am not a coder and hence don’t comment on plugins regularly. I don’t identify the bugs so easily as php experts do. But I can notice things which a normal website visitor can identify and report such bugs like it was done in the case of duplicate content issue and in that case, I could find out solution too. Stumble for Wordpress is such a rare and useful plugin and it does not have any alternatives – which made me think about solution. Now, we have alternatives in this case.

Regular readers here know I have tweaked my theme to a considerable extent and the sole reason behind was to improve the speed and performance of website. During this, I identified many factors which simply overloaded my site and made it slow. Till then Contact Form 7 was used at the contact section. Analyzing it deeply, it was found to create useless dead weight to download which makes the website much slower on low speed internet connections.

Coming to the calculations, one plugin called Contact Form 7 used to put an extra load on each and every page of blog and that total unnecessary downloaded content summed up to 66.9 kbytes. It includes 3 javascripts (two versions of jquery javascript files, one plugin javascript, one plugin CSS). On calculating properly, this extra load will take 5 seconds on a 128kbps connection. We should not forget the fact that even in today’s high speed world, there are many people using internet connections at 56, 128 and 144 kbps connections. Users of slow internet connections simply quit your slow website and start googling for any alternative.

Solution

If you ask me, remove the plugin. There are many other plugins available for same purpose which will not put dead weight on your blog pages.

Customize Echotopic Ads to Earn More Revenues with Incontent Ads

Regular readers here know I am using Echotopic as one of my monetization source since some time. If you want to know my experience with them, its really an impressive and in my opinion, it is one of the best. I have tried Kontera, Infolinks and Echotopic and my experience says Kontera’s earnings are extremely low, InfoLinks is quite good in earnings and the advantage with them is that they accept even a small publisher which makes their doors open for anyone, recently revenues with them was also dropped. Echotopic does not accept everyone who apply, but if you are approved, then don’t leave them.

In InfoLinks, you might have seen the feature to keep single underline ads which would help you to increase earnings. In both Kontera and IL, you can customize the color of highlighting the ad terms. But Echotopic is not so good in user interface and you will not be able to change color nor make them single line ads as you did with other two. Here is how you can customize the ET ads to boost your revenues in the system.

1. Changing the color of Echotopic Ads

This is done by adding one single line of code into the ad code given. Code below shows the original ad tag of ET with additional line added for color (highlighted).

If you are not aware about the color codes, its used by many image editors and you can get from them or check out your CSS which uses the color codes. Change the RRGGBB in above segment with the color code which suits your site design.

2. Making Single Underline Content Ads

Just yesterday I made this change and expecting some good results with this. This is actually which is done entirely outside of Echotopic Ad tags. You need to add a set of code into your template code in order to make the ads show as single line. Add the following code into your footer part which turns all echotopic ads displayed into single underlined links.

If you are worried about making these changes, let me make it clear, the tutorial to change the color of links was provided by Echotopic Publisher Service, and they only provided me the code to make them single underlined. But the code they gave worked for few days and recently it automatically stopped working might be due to some changes in the main stylesheet in their servers. Anyways, I worked it out somehow and sharing the same with you.

Remember that the second part of making the single underline works only when the code is placed after the Echotopic DIV section (where you display the ads), if you use wordpress blog, I recommend you the footer before the tag.

3. Limiting the Advertisments

Few bloggers simply add the in text ads all over the page which actually reduces the revenues because the ads are not concentrated in areas where people read the content. Echotopic ads can be limited with DIV tags.

I know YouTube is the favorite time waster for many of you. Its observed that YouTube videos take some long time to load and hence gets annoying with slower internet connections. In some videos of long duration of say 10 minutes, you want to view only the part which start from 8th minute, you need to load the entire video though its useless. Here is one very good trick to view YouTube videos from any certain point without loading the entire video and hence saving bandwidth and time.

This can be done only on youtube site and not when you add the embed code into your / other websites. Here is how it works, just add the time duration into the url as described below and you are done.

Example: Original video url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv2wAae8tGs

You want to watch only the part which starts from 8 minutes and 21 seconds, then add #t=8m21s into the url and the final url becomes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv2wAae8tGs#t=8m21s

This can also be used even after the page is loaded, just enter the #t= tag in url and hit enter, the video will be served from the specified time without any page reload.
