Customize Echotopic Ads to Earn More Revenues with Incontent Ads

Regular readers here know I am using Echotopic as one of my monetization source since some time. If you want to know my experience with them, its really an impressive and in my opinion, it is one of the best. I have tried Kontera, Infolinks and Echotopic and my experience says Kontera’s earnings are extremely low, InfoLinks is quite good in earnings and the advantage with them is that they accept even a small publisher which makes their doors open for anyone, recently revenues with them was also dropped. Echotopic does not accept everyone who apply, but if you are approved, then don’t leave them.

In InfoLinks, you might have seen the feature to keep single underline ads which would help you to increase earnings. In both Kontera and IL, you can customize the color of highlighting the ad terms. But Echotopic is not so good in user interface and you will not be able to change color nor make them single line ads as you did with other two. Here is how you can customize the ET ads to boost your revenues in the system.

1. Changing the color of Echotopic Ads

This is done by adding one single line of code into the ad code given. Code below shows the original ad tag of ET with additional line added for color (highlighted).

If you are not aware about the color codes, its used by many image editors and you can get from them or check out your CSS which uses the color codes. Change the RRGGBB in above segment with the color code which suits your site design.

2. Making Single Underline Content Ads

Just yesterday I made this change and expecting some good results with this. This is actually which is done entirely outside of Echotopic Ad tags. You need to add a set of code into your template code in order to make the ads show as single line. Add the following code into your footer part which turns all echotopic ads displayed into single underlined links.

If you are worried about making these changes, let me make it clear, the tutorial to change the color of links was provided by Echotopic Publisher Service, and they only provided me the code to make them single underlined. But the code they gave worked for few days and recently it automatically stopped working might be due to some changes in the main stylesheet in their servers. Anyways, I worked it out somehow and sharing the same with you.

Remember that the second part of making the single underline works only when the code is placed after the Echotopic DIV section (where you display the ads), if you use wordpress blog, I recommend you the footer before the tag.

3. Limiting the Advertisments

Few bloggers simply add the in text ads all over the page which actually reduces the revenues because the ads are not concentrated in areas where people read the content. Echotopic ads can be limited with DIV tags.

IPL Fever on Orkut with New Monetization

If you are an orkutter, from India (not sure about other countries) you probably have noticed that the Knight Riders skin has been made available for users. Today, when I logged in, I just noticed that the link to Knight Riders IPL theme is added into the above navigation bar just beside the login id of orkut.

There has already been a lot of buzz going on at orkut communities about the latest hot topics in India like Elections 2009 of India and orkut blog has detailed that. The another great buzz at India is the Indian Premiere League or IPL T20 cricket matches of 2009. Both at the same time has given rise to new and hot orkut communities, but this time, orkut itself has joined hands in building the buzz about IPL 2009 by placing a sponsored ad theme live from KKR. This new theme will be live till May 24th.

Orkut new monetization policy

It has been an year that orkut has started displaying google ads, but apart from that, there had been no other monetization tricks observed there. But this is the first time, orkut has monetized in organization with Knight Riders of IPL and / or Nokia by adding a theme supporting their team along with the theme header leaving room for a link to the Kolkata Knight Riders webpage with Nokia ad featured. It is not so clear that the theme is being sponsored by either Nokia or KKR, buy orkut is surely into new mode of monetization.

One lack I observed with this is, though it is a monetized ad leading to a trusted site, orkut still asks for user permission to visit the page which is common for any other link on orkut placed by users.

Most of the adsense publishers are now aware that they can view more detailed stats about their earnings when their Adsense is intergrated with Analytics. This integration is possible for one’s account only if the account is invited to try out this new feature.

Not all adsense publishers are being invited to integration process, its slowly rolling out for different publishers. If you want to be invited before it appears on your profile, you need to submit the Adsense / Analytics Integration interest form.

Once your request is submitted, the team will review it and integrate analytics to adsense soon. You will not get the integration done as and when you submit the interest form.

Sometimes, you might have thought of contacting all commentators through e-mail. This is a very needed feature for some announcements or special occasions. By using this you can drive more traffic to your blog or it also helps to keep personal contact with your readers. Wordpress by itself does not have such feature, but you can make use of one plugin which helps you to ease the process.

Contact Commenters is the Wordpress plugin which makes this process. You can do it instantly and send mass mails to thousands of your commentators instantly. I made use of the same for my anniversary contest announcement and found it working successful for more number of mails.

It is not just the plugin to help you send mass mails, it has different options like you can choose the recepients like all commentators, inactive ones, in a particular date range, top commentators, recent ones and also to ANY mail id. Also you can decide the from mail id from which you can send. If you fear about few spammers who have commented on your blog, you can simply use some non existing mail ids like noreply@domain.com or anything you like (don’t misuse this feature).

You will then be provided with option to compose the mail subject, body, from name and mail id. You can also insert the name of commentator if you are sending to commentators in the mail body. Also you have option to send mails as BCC or individually. Individual mails are good as there are less chances of getting filtered as spam.

Note: Use this plugin only for good intentions. Sending spams can never result you in valued visitors, but you will get blacklisted and you will lose reputation due to spams.

Drawback: You can also send mails from billgates@microsoft.com . Sending fake messages is the main disadvantage with this as there are no footers are also included, this may also be misused for phishing. My suggestion would be to limit the mails sent from ids of that domain. If I send mails from techpavan.com, let the mails be from any mail id keeping @techpavan.com as constant. The id can be edited like pavan, admin, noreply, contact, stupid etc.. I am not sure if it is possible, but if possible, I expect that in the next update.

Use Allowed Sites to save Adsense Account

Adsense account is a life time opportunity and everyone should make use of it in a proper way and also you should take care of your adsense account in all possible ways.

I have seen few theme authors who simply lost their adsense accounts for no bad thing they committed. It is again from experience they learned the fact behind the punishment from Adsense team. You might have noticed some theme authors embedding adsense codes into the theme they release for public. This is very bad practice and may lead to banning of adsense account. If you embed the adbrite code or any such other advertising networks, its ok, but not for adsense.

The reason behind: If the theme is very good, obviously many people will download and use it. Everyone started using the theme and few used the same on their illegal or pr0n sites which was against Google-Adsense Policies.

If you are a theme author and have done the same mistake, don’t panic I have a solution which can save account without even removing the code from their sites. Follow these steps:

Login to your adsense account.
Goto Adsense Setup > Allowed sites.
Click on the radio button reading – "Only allow certain sites to show ads for my account". This will allow only the sites listed below to show the ads.
Now goto the text box and add the url of all your sites where the ads should be displayed.

Few notes while using this:

People don’t just access your sites directly, there are other means too – search engine cache, google translate and few others. Its better you allow them to display your ads. It is also important that you check the allowed sites page periodically to know who else is displaying your ads and you may allow if it is again another search engine or valid/authorized one. Take care that you don’t allow SOMEONE ELSE to display your ads on their site.

People carry out different experiments on Adsense color palette to grab the attention of visitor towards the ad. Though the most recommended way it to make it embed with the content and the same color pattern of the content and hyperlinks, it may not work the same way for all. Here is one way for using adsense color palette efficiently, but unfortunately it is not so popular.

You may use different palettes on a particular ad block. This feature of adsense is not very widely practiced, but few people I know have achieved success with this and found a good improvement in earnings. You also may give it a try and see how it works on your site.

Login to Google Adsense.
Now, its your wish you want to create a new ad or edit the existing one, choose adsense for content or manage ads.
Moving on to color palette, you will find option at the bottom to Use Multiple Palettes. Select that.

Now you will be provided with option to select multiple palettes. Using the Ctrl key, you can click on maximum 4 ad palettes.

You can check the preview of ads on the left pane. Select wisely that all the palettes you choose fits best on your site.
Rest all procedure is same as you do for any other adsense code, save the settings and you are done.

If you are editing the existing one, there is no need to change the code on your site, it will be done by itself and will take some time (around 10 minutes) to come into effect.

The palettes will be refreshed on each page load, but palettes are never mixed, at a time, only one palette will be used.
